Two phrases are repeated to novice race car drivers throughout their education: "find the line" and "follow the line." Clearly, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has found the racers line - the invisible trick of geometry that turns an oval track into a straight road and forms the border between victory and defeat. From his first win at Texas Motor Speedway through many more celebrations in victory lane, the driver of the no. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet Monte Carlo has proved his ability to stick to the line like a locomotive on rails.

Unlike most of his competitors, however, the third-generation racer has a heritage that drives him and is as much a part of his performance as his car or crew chief.

"Follow The Line" is the latest painting by Sam Bass to explore one of NASCARs longest running and most successful family legacies. Through it, a second "line" is revealed for the young driver.

"The Earnhardt family is steeped in tradition," Bass says. "I wanted to do a painting featuring the simplicity of the no. 8 car at speed, yet make it clear there is so much more going on than first meets the eye.

"The years of competition and experience handed down from Dale Earnhardt to Dale Earnhardt Jr. are etched into the very track he now competes on."
